Home automation - Automatic watering of Plants (IoT)

Hackathon scope

Challenge: Create and demonstrate a simple watering strategy for plants with Arduino

Time 3 hours

Limits The scope of this challenge is focused on the accomplishment of the watering. Connecting it to the cloud for logging and remote control is outside the scope this time.

Awards

  • Most creative overall solution given the starting components
  • Best watering solution
  • Best sensor solution
  • Best control loop strategy
  • Most robust solution
  • Most pimped solution

Presentation

Show and tell with mingle and demonstration together afterwards.

It's a hackathon! Focus on demonstration and proof of concept. Fake it and explain how you are thinking!

Technology

With an Arduino Microprocessor and a servo, a relay and some analog inputs/outputs you have the foundation of a simple home automation system. A push of the button should get things moving right away!

Start kit

Every kit has a basic setup for movement and an additional component that might vary between teams (valve, pump, motor, extra servos)

Starting code skeleton to get you on the way can be found on GitHub

Should be working with servo movement and relay activation on button press.

Arduino Micro processor

Micro servo SG92

Moisture sensor

Relay 5V

One of the following: Pump / Valve / Additional servos

Additional random material for prototyping and pimping solutions are provided

Knowledge base

What is an Arduino Microprocessor?

How to blink a LED

How to build a light sensor

How a Relay works

What is a Plant..?
